Why have the flu vaccine? Flu is unpleasant for most people, but for some it can be dangerous or even life-threatening. Having the vaccine each year is the best way to help protect yourself and the people around you. The NHS offers free flu jabs to people at the highest risk of serious complications from flu. You may also be entitled to a free NHS flu vaccination if you care for a vulnerable person. Your vaccination There are several types of flu vaccine, and the recommended types for 2026/27 are updated to match the strains expected this winter. Our pharmacist will offer you the vaccine most appropriate for your age and health, and will tell you which one you're having on the day. None of the flu vaccines can give you flu. Are there any side effects? The flu vaccine is safe and effective. Side effects are usually mild and pass within a day or two. The most common are soreness where the injection was given, a slightly raised temperature, headache, aching muscles or joints, and generally feeling unwell. Please tell your pharmacist if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction to a flu vaccine. If you have an egg allergy, let us know and we can offer an egg-free vaccine. It usually takes 10 days to two weeks after your vaccination to build full protection. If you do catch flu after being vaccinated, it's likely to be milder and shorter.
